Last week I attempted to see Jared Diamond talk about his newest… - Accretions

Last week I attempted to see Jared Diamond talk about his newest book, but instead I stood in line for a while and then went to kragen's house when the organizers announced that the auditorium was full. But I ordered the book today while shopping for a few books for research. It sounds something like Jane Jacob's latest book, Dark Age Ahead, to which my uncle introduced me. I haven't read either yet, but I'm both worried and skeptical of the authors' claims of impending disaster.

On a more personal note, I recently learned that my younger sister is engaged and will be having a baby girl in December. My half-brother will be an uncle at 18 months. :~) Time to stock up on Google baby T-shirts ...

My summer internship is starting to wrap up (last day is August 12), and fall research is already tugging at my sleeve. The first paper deadline of the fall is September 23, and we're just starting to write.

Nieces are great fun! When she gets old enough be sure to buy her lots of noisy toys, and introduce her to the Disney Princesses stuff (consumer crack for little girls!). As a sidenote, toys that don't require batteries are good. For some reason, there never seemed to be enough batteries in my sister's house to keep the chatty doll working. Oh, and be sure to teach your niece how to use mommy's cell phone ASAP. By age 4 - 5 at the latest.

I love being an uncle.

I can get some for free, but only if I get to the T-shirt bin right after they've refilled it. :~) Otherwise, I can get anything in the Google store (http://www.googlestore.com) for half-price.

Hi there. I followed you from Ping's blog because I started to write a response in the feminism thread, but it started to get rather long and threadjackish.

And then I saw you work at Google! But I'm starting August 22nd, so I guess I'll miss you.

Damn, I'm looking forward to working there, just for the chances to hang with guys like Jared Diamond. Collapse was very interesting, but slightly less coherent and readable than his Guns, Germs and Steel.

I wouldn't put Dark Age Ahead in the same class. I didn't enjoy that one at all, but maybe I should let you come to your own conclusions.
